Washington: US President Donald Trump would withdraw punitive measures against Colombia after Bogota agreed to receive illegal migrants repatriated by Washington, the White House spokesperson said.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Karoline Leavitt, in a statement late Sunday, mentioned that Colombia agreed to unconditionally receive illegal migrants who entered the US illegally. As a result, Trump would not impose a 25 percent customs tariff on Colombian exports.
The agreement from the Colombian government includes Trump's conditions for the repatriation of illegal migrants on board military planes without delay, Leavitt noted.
Leavitt also stated that while the tariffs and financial penalties would be temporarily suspended, visa restrictions against Colombian officials and tougher customs inspection measures against Colombian citizens and cargo ships would remain in place until the first batch of migrants was delivered.
Trump had previously announced sanctions against Colombian President Gustavo Petro and his government, along with the tariffs, after Petro refused to accept planes carrying the illegal migrants.
The US Administration has been applying pressure on Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, and Brazil to accept their citizens who entered the US illegally.
