Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire and will return to the peace accord. This development follows a period of heightened tension and conflict between the two nations.
According to Kuwait News Agency, President Trump took to his Truthsocial account to reveal details of the agreement. He stated that he had a productive conversation with Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet. The discussions focused on the recent escalation of their long-standing conflict.
Trump highlighted that both leaders have committed to halting all hostilities as of Friday evening and have agreed to adhere to the original peace accord, which was previously established with Trump's involvement and the support of Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The conflict was reportedly reignited by a roadside bomb that resulted in the death and injury of numerous Thai soldiers. Although the incident was deemed accidental, it led to a strong retaliatory response from Thailand. Trump emphasized that both nations are eager to maintain peace and continue their trade relations with the United States.
In his statement, Trump expressed his honor in collaborating with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to avert a potential major conflict. He also extended his gratitude to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia for his significant contribution to the resolution of the tensions.
