US Job Openings Decline in July, Labor Market Shows Signs of Cooling

Washington: Job openings in the United States experienced a slight decline in July 2025, reaching levels not commonly seen since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. This development has heightened concerns about a potential cooling in the labor market, as reported by the US Department of Labor on Wednesday. According to Kuwait News Agency, the Job Openings and Labor Turnover report from the Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated that the number of job openings saw a minor decrease from 7.2 million to 7.18 million in July. Despite this change, both hires and total separations remained stable at 5.3 million over the month. The report highlighted that within the separations category, quits stood at 3.2 million, while layoffs and discharges were at 1.8 million, both unchanged from previous figures. The monthly release provides estimates of job openings, hires, and separations across various sectors, industry types, and establishment sizes. Job openings encompass all positions available on the last b usiness day of the month. For July, the number and rate of job openings were largely unchanged at 7.2 million and 4.3 percent, respectively. However, specific sectors saw a decrease in job openings, including health care and social assistance (-181,000), arts, entertainment, and recreation (-62,000), and mining and logging (-13,000). In contrast, hires increased in other services by 86,000. Total separations, including quits, layoffs, discharges, and other separations like retirements or transfers, remained steady at 5.3 million and 3.3 percent, respectively. Quits, often a measure of workers' willingness to leave their jobs, were unchanged at 3.2 million, with notable increases in professional and business services (+197,000) and decreases in construction (-80,000) and transportation, warehousing, and utilities (-49,000). Layoffs and discharges also held steady at 1.8 million and 1.1 percent. There was a decrease in layoffs within professional and business services (-130,000), while the federal government experienced a slight increase (+5,000). Other separations saw a decrease to 272,000, down by 63,000 in July.
