Two Dead, Hundreds Injured as Typhoon Danas Hits Taiwan

Taipei: Typhoon Danas has made landfall in southern Taiwan, resulting in at least two fatalities and 334 injuries, Taipei-based Central News Agency reported, citing the Central Emergency Operation Center. The storm struck the region late Sunday night and was downgraded to a tropical storm early Monday morning.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the southern city of Tainan suffered the highest number of injuries, with 165 people affected as Typhoon Danas made its impact. The Central Emergency Operation Center recorded approximately 2,270 storm-related incidents across the nation, including damage to infrastructure and fallen trees. Authorities have issued warnings for potential landslides and other hazards in mountainous areas of central, southern, and eastern Taiwan.

The typhoon also caused significant power and water outages, affecting around 500,000 households at the height of the storm. Water supply disruptions were reported for over 68,000 households.

The Central Weather Administration noted that Danas was downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm around 5 a.m. (2100 Sunday GMT) as its outer bands weakened. Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang has urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant for potential mudslides and has called on local governments to expedite recovery efforts and support affected communities.
