Trump Approves South Korea’s Bid to Build Nuclear-Powered Submarine

Seoul: US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has granted approval for South Korea to construct a nuclear-powered submarine. This announcement was reported by the Yonhap News Agency, following a meeting between Trump and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. The two leaders met during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) events and discussed the necessity for South Korea to obtain fuel for nuclear-powered submarines.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Trump revealed on his Truth Social account that he had authorized South Korea to build a nuclear-powered submarine. He emphasized that nuclear-powered submarines are more advanced and capable than the existing diesel-powered ones in the South Korean fleet. The decision was made based on the strength of the US-South Korea military alliance, which Trump described as "stronger than ever before."

Trump arrived in South Korea on Wednesday for a two-day visit. The visit comes at a time when South Korea's nuclear fuel processing activities are governed by a nuclear energy agreement with the United States. This agreement permits Seoul to enrich uranium below 20 percent, but only with US consent.

During their discussions, President Lee highlighted the limitations of diesel-powered submarines, particularly in terms of their underwater navigation capabilities. He argued that these limitations hinder South Korea's ability to effectively monitor North Korean and Chinese submarines. In response, he requested US approval to procure the necessary fuel for nuclear-powered submarines.

The South Korean presidential office expressed its approval of Trump's decision on Thursday. The office committed to maintaining close cooperation with the US throughout the submarine construction process. Presidential spokesperson Kim Nam-jun stated that the decision would significantly enhance South Korea's defense capabilities and strengthen its military's role in defending the nation.
