Madrid: Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union summoned the Israeli Charge d’Affairs in Madrid to condemn the targeting of a diplomatic delegation during their tour of the Jenin refugee camp. The incident, which took place earlier today, involved diplomats from Spain, Europe, and several Arab countries.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares addressed the incident on his X account, expressing that the shooting was unacceptable. He announced the summoning of the Israeli embassy’s charge d’affairs in Madrid to demand an explanation and accountability for the attack. Albares emphasized the importance of supporting the diplomats who were fired upon during their visit to the camp.
The diplomatic situation between Spain and Israel has been tense, as Israel has not had an ambassador in Madrid for over a year. This absence followed the recall of Ambassador Rodica Radian by Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, in protest against Spain’s decision to recognize an independent Palestinian state in May of last year.
