Moscow: A previously hammered out landmark strategic partnership pact between Russia and North Korea has come into effect after the two sides exchanged relevant ratification documents.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the treaty, effective as of December 4, was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June during Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, as reported by the Russian Foreign Ministry in a press release. This agreement primarily aims at promoting and bolstering bilateral relations in the fields of tourism, economy, and security. It also obligates both sides to provide military assistance in the case of an attack on the other.
The agreement officially came into force on Wednesday, when the ratification documents were exchanged in Moscow by the countries’ deputy foreign ministers, Kim Jong Gyu of North Korea and Andrei Rudenko of Russia. This significant development comes at a time when there are reports accusing North Korea of sending thousands of soldiers to assist Ru
ssia in its conflict with Ukraine.
