Vienna: The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) announced on Monday that its 9th International Seminar, recently held in Vienna, marked a significant milestone in fostering international cooperation within the energy sector. The event solidified OPEC's role as a crucial platform for dialogue and the development of future global policies amidst an increasingly intricate global landscape.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the seminar saw high-level participation from 23 ministers and government officials, 35 leaders from national and international companies, and 12 heads of international organizations, alongside more than 1,000 participants. The intensive program featured three ministerial sessions and seven high-level roundtables with contributions from 71 speakers.
OPEC highlighted the event as a reflection of its convening power and commitment to openness and transparency. The seminar was supported by 28 sponsors who showcased innovations, and 24 media partners from 13 countries across five continents, underlining OPEC's emphasis on broad media engagement.
The seminar coincided with several significant anniversaries, including the 56th anniversary of OPEC's first seminar and the upcoming 60th anniversary of its headquarters in Vienna. OPEC's strong relationship with Austria was highlighted by the participation of Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Austria's Federal Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism.
The seminar's theme, 'Charting pathways together: the future of global energy,' encapsulated OPEC's past, present, and future, emphasizing the need for individual pathways in energy policy that reflect national circumstances. The event reiterated the importance of balancing energy security, access, and poverty alleviation with emission reduction.
Additionally, the seminar launched the 2025 edition of OPEC's World Oil Outlook, underscoring the need for data-driven energy policy. The report projects continued centrality of oil within the energy mix and stresses the necessity of timely investments in the oil industry to meet rising global demand and population growth.
Addressing energy poverty was another key focus, with over two billion people lacking access to efficient cooking fuels and approximately 750 million lacking electricity. This disparity in energy access must be a priority in discussions about the energy future.
Overall, the seminar demonstrated OPEC's vitality as it approaches its 65th anniversary, with widespread support for its advocacy on critical energy issues. OPEC expressed gratitude to all participants for their contributions to the seminar's success.
