Oil Ministry Highlights Kuwait’s Commitment to Nuclear Radiation Safety

Kuwait city: The Ministry of Oil emphasized Kuwait's dedication to nuclear radiation safety, noting it as a significant health and environmental challenge. The ministry has implemented an integrated regulatory system with emergency plans and scientific monitoring networks to ensure environmental and health safety across the country.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Sheikha Tamadher Khalid Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the Ministry's Director of Public Relations and Media, stated at a seminar titled "Risks and Damages Resulting from Nuclear Reactors and Their Impact On Human Health" that such initiatives are vital for raising awareness. She commended governmental and technical bodies for their efforts in promoting knowledge about nuclear radiation risks and prevention methods, which are essential for establishing a sustainable preventive culture in both public and private sectors.

Sheikha Tamadher highlighted the ministry's collaboration with relevant authorities to enhance community awareness on nuclear reactor dangers and radioactive leakage risks. This includes educational programs, workshops, and improving national infrastructure for emergency preparedness and response.

Chief Radiologist Salem Al-Azmi from the Ministry of Health's Radiation Protection Department elaborated on the health risks associated with nuclear reactors. He explained that while nuclear reactors are crucial for efficient electricity production, they pose significant risks if not properly managed. He described how nuclear reactors generate power through nuclear fission, a process that converts water into steam to drive turbines.

Al-Azmi pointed out that nuclear power is environmentally favorable in terms of land and resource use compared to other electricity sources. However, he warned about potential environmental effects from radioactive leakage, which could contaminate air, water, and soil. Nevertheless, he assured that these impacts are manageable and that rehabilitation plans are effective in mitigating any adverse effects.

In terms of protective measures, Al-Azmi emphasized staying indoors during radiological incidents to reduce exposure and using face masks to prevent inhalation of radioactive particles. He also mentioned the Iranian Bushehr nuclear reactor, noting its peaceful purpose and international supervision, ensuring it is not a military facility.
