Militant Attack on Tourists in Jammu and Kashmir Results in 28 Fatalities

Pahalgam: At least 28 tourists, including two foreign nationals, were killed and several others wounded in a major militant attack in Pahalgam city of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir, media reports indicated.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the Hindu newspaper cited government sources confirming the death of at least 28 tourists following an attack by militants at a prime tourist location in South Kashmir. The attack marks a significant escalation in violence against civilians in the region.

Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, stated that the exact death toll is still being determined and will be announced later. He remarked on his official X account, "This attack is much larger than anything we've seen directed at civilians in recent years," highlighting the severity of the incident.

The attack has prompted widespread condemnation from Indian leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response to the attack, Modi engaged in discussions with Home Minister Amit Shah, who traveled to Jammu and Kashmir to assess the situation and ordered necessary actions to be taken.

Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad have been highlighted once again, as India accuses Pakistan of supporting and funding armed groups in Kashmir, allegations that Pakistan denies.
