Kuwait’s Historical Milestones and Losses Remembered

Kuwait city: Today marks several significant events in Kuwait's history, with developments spanning from economic advancements to somber losses. Notably, these events have shaped the country's path and reflect on its strategic decisions and cultural heritage.

According to Kuwait News Agency, in a landmark decision, Kuwait Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed a decree establishing the Kuwait Ports Authority, placing it under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications. This strategic move was aimed at enhancing the country's maritime capabilities and infrastructure.

In 1990, during Iraq's occupation, there was an unsuccessful attempt by Iraqi forces to compel Kuwaiti nationals to convert their civil identification cards to Iraqi ones, with a deadline set for December 1st. This act of resistance by Kuwaiti citizens was a testament to their national identity amid adversity.

The year 1993 was significant for Kuwait's oil industry as the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation discovered a new oil field south of Umm Gdair. This discovery underlined Kuwait's ongoing commitment to bolstering its energy sector. The same year, however, saw a breach in security when nearly 350 Iraqis infiltrated Kuwait's northern borders, attacking workers in the security belt line.

In financial developments, Kuwait reached a medium-term credits facilities agreement with a consortium of international French banks in 1993. The agreement, totaling USD 860 million, was geared towards financing future needs for French-made products for various Kuwaiti government authorities.

The industrial sector also saw advancement in 1994 with the opening of the Interlocks Factory by the National Industries Company. This establishment became the largest of its kind in Kuwait and the Gulf region, marking a milestone in Kuwait's industrial growth.

In 2015, former Members of Parliament Yousef Al-Mekhled and Dr. Nasser Sarkhouh passed away at ages 94 and 68, respectively. Their contributions to Kuwait's political landscape are remembered by many. Additionally, in 2021, Marzouq Saeed, a celebrated Al-Arabi SC and National football team player, passed away at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy in Kuwaiti sports.
