Kuwait Cancer Awareness Campaign Reports 40 Pct Recovery Increase

Kuwait city: Chairman of the National Campaign for Cancer Awareness (CAN) Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh announced that Kuwait has recorded a 40 percent increase in cancer recovery rates over the past decade. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 11th Joint Gulf Week "United by Our Excellence," Al-Saleh highlighted the impact of heightened public awareness and early medical consultations, emphasizing that early detection significantly boosts recovery chances.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Saleh noted that where most breast cancer patients previously sought treatment at advanced stages three and four, the majority now present at stages one and two. This shift has raised recovery rates to above 85 percent, demonstrating the success of awareness initiatives. Since its inception, the campaign has made significant progress, primarily in increasing cancer-related health awareness across Gulf societies, as supported by a study conducted by the national campaign.

The study revealed a 30 percent increase in cancer awareness within Kuwaiti society and a notable decline in the fear of the disease. Many individuals now perceive cancer as a manageable chronic condition. Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the 11th Gulf Week, Dr. Hessa Al-Shahen, noted that the event coincided with the Regional Oncology Conference and included over 45 initiatives, such as seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and lectures organized by participating associations.

Al-Shahen emphasized that the robust participation provides positive momentum for future efforts. Several associations have adopted awareness and prevention programs to promote early detection, and she expressed gratitude to supporters and participating boards for their mobilizing efforts.
