Kuwait Calls for UN Action on Prisoners and Missing Kuwaiti Properties

New York: Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Tariq Al-Bannai, emphasized the critical importance of global follow-up through the UN Security Council to find just solutions to issues concerning prisoners, missing persons, and Kuwaiti properties. Al-Bannai's remarks were delivered during a session held by the UN Security Council, which also discussed a report by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on these matters, including the national archives.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Al-Bannai highlighted that these are humanitarian issues, not political or bilateral disputes, underscoring the families' right to know the fate of their missing loved ones. He stressed that the return of Kuwait's national archives is vital for restoring the nation's memory, describing it as a cornerstone for protecting Kuwaiti heritage. Any delay in this process, he noted, undermines historical justice, which is a fundamental right beyond political calculations or procedural delays.

Al-Bannai called for a genuine commitment to translating words into actions, far from procrastination. He pointed out that the Secretary-General's report reflects significant procrastination in addressing these issues and that substantial efforts are still required. With over 300 people still missing, he stated that this lack of progress impedes the pursuit of human justice.

The ambassador reiterated Kuwait's full support for the Secretary-General's recommendation to appoint a high-level UN official to oversee this matter following the end of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq's mandate in December 2025. He emphasized that ongoing follow-up and reporting to the Security Council are essential to maintain transparency and international oversight.

Al-Bannai also made it clear that implementing Security Council resolutions is not just a Kuwaiti demand but a legitimate expectation based on the Council's role in maintaining international peace and security. He affirmed that while bilateral cooperation with Iraq is necessary, international follow-up through the Security Council is indispensable.
