Kuwait Affirms Commitment to Marine Environment Protection at UNESCO Meeting

Paris: Kuwait is firmly committed towards marine environment protection efforts, an official told the United Nation's cultural agency UNESCO amid talks on Wednesday, citing the country's rich maritime tradition. Given the importance of the matter, Kuwait has delved into extensive research over the hydrological and chemical changes in the marine environment, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research's (KISR) coastal and marine resources department chief Dr. Turki Al-Saeed said amid a gathering of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) in the French capital.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Kuwait has increased investments to bolster marine environment research through its own designated vessel designed to study scientific data at sea, equipped with modern technology. Dr. Al-Saeed highlighted that the data includes physical, chemical, and biological factors affecting the marine environment, a field KISR has extensively studied through its own research platforms.

UNESCO's IOC is the only UN body specialized in marine science, promoting international cooperation to improve the management of the ocean, coasts, and marine resources.
