Iran and Russia Explore Enhanced Cooperation in Energy Sectors

Tehran: Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad and Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov discussed on Wednesday ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various energy sectors. Paknejad said after the 19th meeting of the Iranian-Russian Joint Committee for Economic Cooperation that talks covered energy cooperation, development of Iran's oil and gas fields, importing Russian gas to ease domestic shortages, and expanding railway links between the two countries.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Paknejad added that discussions also covered the peaceful use of nuclear energy and speeding up construction of the second and third units of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. Paknejad said both sides stressed accelerating the implementation of past agreements and removing obstacles to expand bilateral cooperation.

The Russian Energy Minister said that Iran and Russia have built strong cooperation among the Joint Committee's working groups and achieved significant progress over the past year. Tsivilyov said that in the past 11 months, project implementation has increased to more than 13 times the level of the previous year.

During the meeting, the two countries signed memoranda of understanding on cooperation in the fields of standards, petroleum research, labor, and social welfare.
