Ghana Reports 1st Mpox-Related Fatality

Accra: Amid a sharp spike in the outbreak of Monkeypox (Mpox), the Ghana Health Service confirmed the first death due to the disease on Sunday. Twenty-three new infections have been registered this week, taking the overall number since mid-May to 257 and marking the biggest weekly rate in the West African country, the GHS said in a press release. Minister for Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh allayed concerns about the pandemic situation, saying that it was under control. He highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and responsible behavior to stem the spread of the disease. According to Kuwait News Agency, recent statistics from across Africa showed that the continent had more than 47,000 lab-confirmed Mpox cases and 221 fatalities since January 2024.
