Kuwait City: The GCC Ministerial Council on Monday condemned the Israeli occupation aggressions on Iran, which undermine its sovereignty and security and marks a blatant breach of international law and the UN Charter. In a statement issued following its virtual extraordinary meeting, chaired by Kuwaiti Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Al-Yahya, the council emphasized the necessity of returning to the diplomatic track and reaching a ceasefire to maintain regional security and stability.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the council urged all parties to exert concerted efforts to de-escalate tensions and pursue diplomatic approaches as effective ways of settling conflicts. The council highlighted the importance of exercising maximum self-restraint to avoid exposing the region and its people to the risks of war.
The council also underscored the significant role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in promoting preventive security and raised concerns about the impacts of targeting nuclear facilities due to serious human and environmental risks. It called on the UN Security Council (UNSC) to fulfill its responsibilities by demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities and de-escalation to protect regional and international peace.
Furthermore, the GCC Ministerial Council urged the continuation of US-Iranian negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program with Omani mediation. It emphasized the necessity of adhering to the principles of the UN Charter and international law, including good neighborliness, respect for state sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and resolving disputes through peaceful means rather than force.
The council concluded by calling for the protection of maritime security and the safety of waterways in the region. It addressed activities threatening regional and international security, such as targeting commercial ships and threatening maritime shipping lanes, international trade, and oil facilities in the GCC member countries.
