Cairo: Egypt and Syria have entered into two significant memoranda of understanding (MoUs) under which Egypt will supply Syria with natural gas and petroleum products to tackle pressing energy shortages.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced the agreements following a meeting between Egypt's Minister of Petroleum, Karim Badawi, and a Syrian delegation led by Deputy Energy Minister for Oil Affairs, Ghiath Diab. The agreements mark a critical step in addressing Syria's energy needs.
The ministry's statement detailed that the natural gas from Egypt, intended mainly for power generation, would reach Syria through regasification vessels or existing transportation networks. The collaboration also involves Egypt furnishing technical expertise and support to help restore Syria's damaged gas and oil infrastructure.
These agreements highlight Egypt's growing influence as a regional energy center. Recently, Egypt has established similar energy collaboration with Lebanon for natural gas and with Cyprus to connect Cypriot gas to Egyptian liquefaction facilities.
