Brussels: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the Commission will provide European car manufacturers with additional time to meet the 2025 emissions reduction targets without incurring fines.
According to Kuwait News Agency, von der Leyen made the announcement during the second meeting of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of the European Automotive Industry. She stated that there is a “clear demand for more flexibility on CO2 targets.” As a result, companies will have three years, rather than annual compliance, to meet the requirements. She emphasized that the targets remain unchanged, as the Commission aims to transition to clean mobility.
The EC President also revealed an agreement to establish an industrial alliance. This alliance will allow companies to pool resources and collaborate on the development of shared software, chips, and autonomous driving technologies.
Furthermore, von der Leyen assured that the EU would enhance testing and deployment rules and support large-scale autonomous driving trials. She highlighted the importance of accelerating the deployment of autonomous vehicles on Europe’s roads. The Commission plans to present these initiatives as part of an Action Plan for Steel and Metals, set to be announced on Tuesday.
