Washington: Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt have announced the formation of a high-level working group on Greenland, following discussions with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The talks, held in Washington, focused on enhancing Arctic security and the long-term security of Greenland.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Rasmussen emphasized the need for a joint approach to increase Arctic security. He highlighted Denmark's commitment to contributing additional military resources, including ships and drones, to bolster security efforts. Rasmussen also acknowledged the US's existing military access to Greenland under the 1951 defense agreement and expressed openness to examining any further requests from the US constructively.
Rasmussen reiterated Greenland's importance within NATO, emphasizing Denmark's push for a stronger collective role in Greenland alongside allies. He expressed eagerness to collaborate with the US to advance security agendas while respecting Denmark's territorial integrity and the rights of the Greenlandic people.
Despite some fundamental disagreements, Rasmussen described the discussions as frank and constructive, with both parties agreeing to form a high-level working group. This group will focus on addressing American security concerns while respecting Denmark's red lines. The initial meeting of this group is expected to occur in the coming weeks.
