Peshawar: At least three policemen were killed while six others were injured in a militant attack on their check post in Pakistan's northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province bordering Afghanistan. Unknown gunmen opened fire from all sides at a check post in Bahadur Khel area of Karak district in KPK targeting police personnel using light and heavy weapons in an attempt to capture the check post, the local Police Central Office said in a statement on Thursday. "Policemen present at the check post fired back in an encounter which lasted two hours, following which the terrorists fled," according to the statement. It confirmed that three policemen were killed while six others were wounded in the attack. Police personnel injured in the firing were shifted to the nearest government run hospitals.
According to Kuwait News Agency, in a statement to the media, the provincial police chief, IG Zulfiqar Hameed said that the terrorists wanted to lay siege to this check post, overpower it and take over the personnel. However, the terrorists were unsuccessful in their attempts and fled. "KPK police will uproot the menace of terrorism. The terrorists want to cause harm to the people, but the people and KPK police are united," he added. The attack comes at a time when Pakistan has witnessed a rise in terror attacks especially in KPK and Balochistan provinces bordering Afghanistan.
