Chad Parliament Approves Unlimited Presidential Terms

N'djamena: Chad's parliament has passed a constitutional amendment that extends the presidential term from five to seven years and permits the president to serve an unlimited number of terms. This marks a significant shift from the previous limitation of one renewable term.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the decision was made during a joint session of the two parliamentary chambers on Friday evening. The parliament adopted a report from a parliamentary committee tasked with amending the constitution, which established the Fifth Republic on December 29, 2023.

In a notable display of dissent, 18 opposition deputies exited the plenary hall before the vote, openly opposing the amendment. This legislative change also introduces the position of Deputy Prime Minister, signaling further structural modifications in the country's governance framework.
