London: The British Government has announced an investment of GBP 14.2 billion (about USD 19.2 billion) for the construction of the Sizewell C nuclear plant. This initiative aims to enhance the country's energy infrastructure significantly.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the British Department for Energy Security and Decarbonization stated that the Sizewell C nuclear plant is expected to take at least a decade to complete. Once operational, it will provide enough electricity to power six million homes. The department has already engaged in contracts worth GBP 330 million (approximately USD 446 million) with local companies, highlighting a commitment to boost supply chains across the UK. It is projected that 70 percent of contracts will be awarded to 3,500 British suppliers, which will, in turn, support new jobs across various sectors including construction, welding, and hospitality.
The government's investment will facilitate the creation of 10,000 jobs, including 1,500 apprenticeships, and will further support thousands more jobs nationwide. The Sizewell C project follows Britain's most recent nuclear power station, Sizewell-B, which began construction in 1987 and became operational in 1995 after its predecessor, which was officially opened in 1967, was decommissioned.
