Berlin: US President Donald Trump has announced that Patriot missile defense systems will be sent to Ukraine to bolster its efforts against Russian aggression. This decision follows a recent pause in arms shipments by the Trump administration, and the arrangement involves the European Union paying the US for the weapons systems sent to Ukraine.
According to Deutsche Welle, the exact number of Patriot units to be dispatched remains unconfirmed, though Germany has committed to funding at least two of these batteries. The MIM-104 Patriot, developed by US defense giant Raytheon, is a surface-to-air missile system designed to intercept various airborne threats, including tactical ballistic missiles and aircraft.
The Patriot systems, which are already deployed in countries such as Germany, Japan, and Israel, offer a range of capabilities, including defending against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, and aircraft. However, they face challenges against smaller targets like mini drones that operate closer to the ground.
Germany's role in facilitating this deal is significant, as German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is scheduled to meet with US defense officials in Washington. The discussions will center on the specifics of the Patriot missile deal and the broader US-NATO relationship. This comes as Germany continues its campaign to support Ukraine amid a reduction in US support following Trump's return to the White House.
In contrast to the Patriot systems, Germany has declined to send long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine. The Taurus KEPD 350, a joint German-Swedish cruise missile, offers a much greater range than the Patriots, but German Chancellor Frederich Merz has shifted towards aiding Ukraine in developing its own long-range capabilities.
Ukraine has utilized a variety of missile systems against Russian forces, including short-range air defense systems and US-made ATACMS missiles. The Kremlin has previously warned against the supply of Patriot systems to Ukraine, reflecting a strained relationship between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump's announcement of the Patriot missile deal coincides with his criticism of Putin, expressing disappointment and frustration over Putin's actions in Ukraine. Despite ongoing communication, Trump has been unable to halt Russia's military actions in the region.
