US Defense Sec.: Iranian Nuclear Ambitions Neutralized

Washington: US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced on Sunday that "precision strikes" on three Iranian nuclear facilities have effectively "neutralized Iran's nuclear ambitions." The operation, named "Midnight Hammer," was carried out by US Central Command (CENTCOM) and targeted nuclear sites in Iran with the aim of "destroying or severely degrading" their nuclear program. Hegseth made the announcement during a joint press conference with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Kane at the Pentagon.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Hegseth described the operation as a "tremendous and overwhelming success," highlighting the directive from US President Donald Trump, which emphasized dismantling Iran's nuclear program. Hegseth attributed the success to President Trump's "bold and perceptive leadership" and his commitment to achieving peace through strength.

Hegseth emphasized that the operation focused on disabling Iran's nuclear capabilities without targeting Iranian forces or civilians. He reiterated President Trump's warning that any Iranian retaliation would be met with even greater force. The operation, which involved months of preparation, showcased American deterrence and involved a "deception plan and the highest levels of operational security."

The mission featured US B-2 bombers executing the longest flight since 2001 and marked the first operational use of a massive bunker-penetrating bomb. Hegseth underscored that the US does not seek war but will act decisively when its interests are threatened. While he declined to detail protective measures for US forces in the Middle East, he confirmed proactive steps are in place to ensure their safety.

Regarding diplomatic engagement, Hegseth mentioned that messages have been sent to Iran through multiple channels, urging them to negotiate for peace. He acknowledged the possibility of conflict but stressed that the operation's scope was limited to addressing Iran's nuclear program.

Hegseth confirmed that US Congress was notified of the military action after the operation, complying with the War Powers Act. General Dan Kane highlighted the precision of the operation and its successful evasion of Iranian air defenses. He detailed the use of 75 precision-guided munitions, including the first-ever operational use of heavy bunker-penetrating bombs, resulting in significant destruction at the targeted sites.

Kane revealed that over 125 US aircraft participated in the mission, maintaining surprise throughout the operation. Although he did not disclose collaboration specifics, he mentioned preparatory work done in the preceding weeks. The operation targeted Iranian nuclear facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan, marking a significant US military action amid ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and Iran.
