Washington: The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday the cancellation of 83 percent of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) programs. "After a 6 week review we are officially cancelling 83 percent of the programs at USAID," Rubio wrote on X platform.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the 5200 contracts that are now cancelled had spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve, and in some cases even harmed, the core national interests of the United States. Rubio further stated that, in consultation with Congress, the remaining 18 percent of programs, approximately 1000 in number, will be administered more effectively under the State Department.
Rubio expressed gratitude towards US Administrator of the Government Efficiency Elon Musk and the dedicated staff who worked long hours to bring about this significant reform.
