Geneva: The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) Volker Turk called on Thursday the prompt reversal of US sanctions against Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council Francesca Albanese in response to her work on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory. In a statement, Turk emphasized the importance of dialogue and debate over human rights concerns.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Turk stated, "Attacks and threats against Special Procedures mandate holders, as well as key institutions like the International Criminal Court must stop." He highlighted the role of UN Special Rapporteurs and other human rights bodies in tackling sensitive and divisive international issues.
Turk urged that even amidst significant disagreements, UN member states should engage in substantive and constructive dialogue rather than resorting to punitive measures.
