Geneva: UN Undersecretary for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher expressed his deep gratitude to Kuwait on Wednesday for hosting the launch of the "Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO)" for 2025. According to Kuwait News Agency, the UN official hailed the initiative as a sign of Kuwait's "solidarity in that work" and described the country as a "vital partner" in backing UN humanitarian efforts. Following the launch event in Geneva, Fletcher commended Kuwait's support, highlighting endeavors like the GHO as a "collective message from the world with the consent and support of Kuwait." He underscored the importance of this humanitarian work amidst a "polycrisis" caused by ongoing conflicts, climate change, and inequality. Fletcher noted that approximately 305 million people will need urgent assistance through the Humanitarian Response Plan, which involves over 1,500 humanitarian partners. The appeal seeks USD 47 billion to provide life-saving aid across 32 countries and nine refug ee-hosting regions. The UN official warned of "dire consequences" if funding falls short, citing an 80 percent reduction in food assistance in Syria, along with diminishing protection services in Myanmar and sanitation aid cuts in cholera-stricken Yemen. He lamented the increasing severity of armed conflicts, stating that 123 million people have been displaced, while climate disasters continue to devastate communities, disrupt food systems, and force millions to flee their homes. In addressing these crises, Fletcher urged the international community to tackle the root causes and "reclaim our common humanity" through bold political action and renewed commitment to international law.
