Damascus: United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, condemned the recent escalation of Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory, including central Damascus and official buildings. He called on Israel to immediately cease all violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity and to avoid unilateral actions that could worsen the conflict.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Pedersen also expressed concern over the rising violence in the Suweida governorate, a Druze-majority area. The violence has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, interim authority forces, and local armed groups, along with causing injuries and displacements.
Pedersen echoed the Secretary-General's earlier statement and mentioned that he had mobilized all available channels to address the situation. His team is actively engaged in Damascus, reaching out to all parties involved.
The Special Envoy urged the interim authorities and local stakeholders to de-escalate, protect civilians, restore calm, return to dialogue, and prevent further incitement. He noted ongoing efforts to establish a ceasefire and expressed hope for a genuine and lasting de-escalation involving all sides.
Pedersen called for a transparent investigation into the violations and accountability for those responsible. He emphasized the importance of a credible political transition in Syria, based on independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as outlined in Security Council resolution 2254 (2015).
The Special Envoy urged Syrian interim authorities and stakeholders to build political consensus that reflects the unity and diversity of Syria, warning against actions that could risk these objectives.
