New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the need to comply with international law and avoid any forms of ethnic cleansing, calling for the importance of implementing the two-state solution.
According to Kuwait News Agency, this came in the opening speech delivered by Guterres late Wednesday, at the opening of the annual meeting of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. Guterres said that the essence of the Palestinian people's exercise of their inalienable rights lies in their right to live on their land, warning that those rights are constantly slipping out of reach.
He welcomed the ceasefire agreement and the release of prisoners, expressing his thanks to the mediators Qatar, Egypt, and the US for their continuous efforts to ensure the implementation of the agreement. Guterres urged Member States to support the essential work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
He called for the need to adhere to the basic rules of international law and the need to avoid any form of ethnic cleansing and avoid any steps that would exacerbate the situation. The UN Chief stressed that the only sustainable solution for stability in the Middle East is the establishment of a viable and sovereign Palestinian state living in peace and security.
