New York: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Ian Martin from the United Kingdom to spearhead a strategic assessment of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
According to Kuwait News Agency, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced the appointment during a news conference, stating that Martin's role involves reviewing UNRWA's impact and the implementation of its mandate amidst the current political, financial, and security challenges. The assessment will also consider the consequences and risks for Palestinian refugees and propose actionable options for both UN member states and the organization itself.
Martin's extensive experience in UN reviews includes leading an independent strategic review of the UN Mission in Somalia. His previous positions include serving as the UN's top envoy in Libya and undertaking roles in field missions in Timor-Leste, Nepal, Eritrea, Rwanda, and Haiti. His academic background includes studying history and economics at Cambridge University and development economics at Harvard University.
