UK Provides Additional GBP 20 Million Aid to Sudan to Enhance Food and Health Services

Kuwait City: The UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced an additional GBP 20 million in aid to Sudan on Saturday, aiming to bolster food production and reproductive health services amid the ongoing crisis.

According to Kuwait News Agency, Secretary Lammy made the announcement during his visit to Adr© on the Chad-Sudan border. He highlighted the severe humanitarian situation in Sudan, describing it as the largest crisis in the world. He noted that millions have been displaced due to the conflict, which has resulted in severe atrocities against civilians and widespread famine.

Lammy emphasized that the new funding builds on the UK's previous aid, which was doubled in November to GBP 226.5 million to address the humanitarian emergency in Sudan. The funds are intended to provide emergency food assistance to nearly 800,000 displaced individuals, the majority of whom are women and children. The aid will also improve access to shelter, drinking water, emergency health care, and education.

Secretary Lammy urged the international community to take urgent action to prevent further escalation of the crisis, which could lead to increased instability and irregular migration into Europe and the UK. He reiterated the UK's commitment to addressing the root causes of migration to secure its borders as part of the government's Plan for Change.

Lammy stressed that the UK will continue to advocate for greater access to aid and ensure that border crossings and routes remain open and safe, emphasizing that forgetting Sudan would be unforgivable.
