Ottawa: The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with the Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa, the Prime Minister Office statement said today Sunday. According to Kuwait News Agency, Prime Minister Carney confirmed that Canada would ratify the UK's accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), seeking to introduce legislation to their parliament in the autumn. This will bring significant benefits to UK businesses by lowering tariffs when trading with Canada. The two leaders also agreed to establish a joint taskforce to accelerate progress on areas of mutual interest, including technology and artificial intelligence, to support shared growth and national security. The taskforce will work towards advancing the broader UK-Canada Free Trade Agreement. Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the changing global trade and economic landscape, expressing a desire for teams to work swiftly to reduce trade barriers with close partners. On defense and security, both leaders acknowledged the need for NATO allies to unite to enhance collective security amid global volatility. Discussions also covered geopolitical challenges in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific region, with both Prime Ministers reaffirming their unwavering support for Ukraine against Russia's war of aggression. They highlighted the importance of a fair, open, and predictable global trading system and reiterated their commitment to a rules-based international order respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. The leaders agreed on joint initiatives to strengthen economic growth and prosperity and enhance collective security and defense through a Growth and Innovation Partnership and an Enhanced Defence and Security Partnership.
