Trump Signs Order Eliminating Decades of Syria Sanctions

Washington: US Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent announced Monday that President Donald Trump has signed an Executive Order terminating the Syria sanctions program. This move aims to provide the people of Syria with an opportunity for a fresh start following the conclusion of the Assad regime. According to Kuwait News Agency, Secretary Bessent stated that the Treasury Department is implementing the termination of the Syria sanctions program as promised by President Trump. The action is expected to facilitate the reconnection of Syria's economy with global commerce and aid in rebuilding the nation's infrastructure. Bessent emphasized the need for the Syrian government to continue making progress towards establishing a stable and unified country at peace with itself and its neighbors. He expressed hope that the United States' actions will bring much-needed relief to the Syrian people and offer the country a chance for success. The Treasury remains committed to supporting regional stability in the Middle East and promoting economic opportunities. Despite lifting sanctions on Syria, the order maintains sanctions on Bashar al-Assad, his associates, human rights abusers, drug traffickers, and individuals linked to chemical weapons activities, ISIS or its affiliates, and Iranian proxies.
