Washington: US President Donald Trump on Monday announced that Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiating a ceasefire to end the ongoing conflict that has persisted since February 2022, despite numerous diplomatic efforts.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Trump shared on Truth Social that he had just concluded a two-hour call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He expressed optimism about the discussion, stating, “I believe it went very well. Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations towards a ceasefire and, more importantly, an end to the war.” He emphasized that the conditions would be negotiated between the two parties, as they are privy to the details of the negotiation that no one else would be aware of.
Trump highlighted the positive nature of the conversation, saying, “The tone and spirit of the conversation were excellent. If it wasn’t, I would say so now, rather than later.”
He further noted that negotiations will commence immediately, as he has already informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and President of Finland Alexander Stubb about the development. “During a call with me, immediately after the call with President Putin,” Trump added.
Additionally, it was mentioned that the Vatican, represented by the pope, is also interested in hosting the negotiations.
