The Majlis: Central to Saudi Culture and Community

Riyadh: The Majlis, a traditional gathering spot, stands as a significant social element within Saudi society, playing a vital role across the Kingdom. Emphasizing the values of generosity and hospitality, it is often designed to be the largest and most prominent area in homes, highlighting its importance in hosting guests and social gatherings.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the Majlis functions as a living educational environment for people of all ages, maintaining social heritage and imparting traditions associated with hospitality, guest manners, and the serving of dates and Saudi coffee. It also serves as a key location for family and friends to convene, share stories, and celebrate important occasions, thereby reinforcing community and family ties.

In the Al-Jouf Region, cultural majalis have become particularly notable for their dynamic intellectual and social activities. These gatherings bring together authors, researchers, and cultural enthusiasts to engage in discussions on literary works, historical accounts, folk tales, and various social issues.

Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Fadil, an expert in this area, highlighted the consistent interest and participation from intellectuals and the general community in the Majlis. He mentioned that the newly initiated 'Wednesday Majlis' is anticipated to boost cultural interaction, engage young individuals, and enrich them with literary and intellectual discussions.

These gatherings also play a role in strengthening social identity by delving into customs and traditions, recounting regional history, and showcasing archaeological and architectural landmarks alongside contemporary development projects.

Nabati poetry holds a special place in the cultural Majlis, often drawing inspiration from Al-Jouf's natural environment, including lavender and other aromatic plants, which are frequently depicted in poetic imagery and themes.
