Kuwait city: Sanae Takaichi was re-elected Wednesday as Japan's 105th prime minister in a parliamentary vote, following a sweeping victory by her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in recent Lower House elections, reaffirming strong political support and legislative backing.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the 64-year-old premier is set to announce a new Cabinet later in the day, after becoming Japan's first female prime minister last October by winning the LDP leadership race.
Last month, Takaichi dissolved the powerful Lower House to seek a fresh public mandate for her fiscal policies, with her party securing 316 seats in the 465-member chamber empowered to appoint the prime minister.
According public broadcaster NHK, the prime minister is expected to reappoint most members of her previous Cabinet, with possible changes limited, as continuity remains a priority during the next phase of governance.
Born in Nara Prefecture in 1961, Takaichi entered politics after working in media, joined the Liberal Democratic Party in 1996, and first served in Cabinet in 2006 under late premier Shinzo Abe.
