Switzerland Expands Sanctions Against Iran, Adds New Individuals and Entities

Bern: The Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs Education and Research (EAER) announced the addition of 24 individuals and 23 legal entities to the list of those subject to sanctions against Iran. This decision was made by the Federal Council during its meeting on Monday and will take effect on October 21. This action reflects Switzerland’s commitment to international sanctions targeting Iran’s nuclear activities and human rights issues.

According to Kuwait News Agency, the Swiss Federal Council has been implementing coercive measures against Tehran since 2007, in alignment with United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1737, 1747, 1803, and 1929. Switzerland has also partially adopted the European Union’s sanctions over the years.

The statement highlighted that although Switzerland eased some restrictions after the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) came into effect in 2016, following UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), it has continued to enforce sanctions related to nuclear activities and human rights. The current sanctions involve freezing financial assets, banning the supply of military equipment and surveillance devices, and imposing restrictions on investments in the nuclear sector. Additionally, there is a prohibition on providing maintenance services to Iranian cargo aircraft.
