Mogadishu: The Somali National Army (SONNA), in coordination with local forces, has killed more than 20 Al-Shabaab militants in an operation in the Boos Hareeri area of the Middle Shabelle region, state media reported on Saturday.
According to Kuwait News Agency, government forces also seized military vehicles and equipment from the group during the offensive. The operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Somali Federal Government to regain control of areas where militant elements remain active.
Officials described the operation as a strategic effort by the SNA to eliminate the remaining Al-Shabaab fighters, who, according to the report, “suffer from severe weakness” and have been retreating to remote areas in the face of continued military offensives.
The Somali government has been ramping up its military campaign against Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked group, in an effort to restore security and stability in the region.
