Significant Milestones in Kuwait’s History


Kuwait city: In a significant stride towards gender equality, 1956 marked the year when Moudhi Al-Sarhan became the first Kuwaiti female to join the Ministry of Interior’s correctional institute. This historic moment paved the way for greater female participation in various governmental roles within Kuwait.



According to Kuwait News Agency, another key development took place in 1981 when Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a decree to establish the Faculty of Sharia and Islamic Studies at Kuwait University. This decision also included the renaming of the Faculty of Law and Sharia to the Faculty of Law, reflecting a strategic expansion of academic offerings.



The year 1990 was pivotal for Kuwait as it faced Iraqi aggression. During this time, Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah patronized a popular conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The three-day national event saw participants reaffirming their allegiance to the legitimate Kuwaiti leadership. Amidst the turmoil, the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), which had been occupied and looted, began operations from an interim headquarters in London, ensuring the continued flow of news about the occupied nation.



Fast forward to 1999, Kuwait celebrated a sporting victory by clinching the Gulf Junior Squash Championship held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This achievement underscored the country’s commitment to nurturing young athletic talent.



In the realm of international development, 2010 and 2017 were notable years for the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED). In 2010, the KFAED signed a KD 11 million loan agreement with Mauritania to finance the construction of a university campus in Nouakchott. Later, in 2017, the KFAED extended a KD 12 million loan to Senegal aimed at reconstructing a major highway, demonstrating Kuwait’s ongoing commitment to supporting infrastructure development in other nations.



In 2018, the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Cultural Center distinguished itself by winning the Best Services Architecture Building award in the Middle East and North Africa, highlighting Kuwait’s achievements in architectural excellence and cultural investment.
