Saudi Arabia talks aim to return Syria to “Arab surroundings”

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan held talks with his Syrian counterpart, Faisal Mekdad, aimed at resolving the crisis there and returning Damascus to its “Arab surroundings,” according to Saudi Press Agency on Wednesday.

At the meeting’s conclusion, a joint press statement said it also aimed at the “resumption of its (Syria’s) natural role in the Arab world,” alongside necessary steps to achieve a comprehensive political settlement to the crisis and national reconciliation there.

The ministers “discussed efforts to reach a political solution to the crisis that preserves Syria’s unity, security, stability, Arab identity and territorial integrity in a way that achieves the good of its people.” Both agreed on the importance of providing suitable environments for humanitarian aid to reach all regions of Syria and for the return of refugees and displaced persons, alongside measures that contribute to the stabiliation of the situation there, the statement added.

They also discussed the need to tighten security and combat terrorism, to enhance cooperation on combating drug smuggling, support for Syrian state institutions to extend control over territories through ending the presence of armed militias and to end external interference in Syrian internal affairs.
