Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday appointed Alexander Darchiev as Russian ambassador to the United States. The decision reflected Moscow's efforts to promote Russian diplomatic presence in Washington, and ushers in a fresh stage of relations between both countries.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the move also came in the context of a remarkable development of Russian-U.S. relations as the Russian Foreign Ministry said last week that a meeting was held between Russian and U.S. officials in Turkiye to look into how to restore diplomatic relations.
During the six-hour meeting in Istanbul late February, the delegations worked to try to restore the normal functioning of their embassies after years of tit-for-tat expulsions. Moscow has had no ambassador in Washington since last October when the previous envoy, Anatoly Antonov, left his post.
