Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said Wednesday that the first GCC-EU Summit showed a consensus among the convening leaders on major regional issues, including the Israeli wars in Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
“The only way out (of the current situation) is the two-state solution and a ceasefire agreement,”Al-Thani said in a press conference after the conclusion of the Brussels-hosted summit.
He added that the summit, which was held at very sensitive time, showed both sides’ commitment to their strategic partnership.
Al-Thani appreciated the High Representative of the EU External Relations Josep Borrell for his call for a ceasefire in Gaza and his “very frank and supportive” stance on this issue.
He called for an end to the war in Lebanon, restoring confidence in the Lebanese government and support the state armed forces.
The Qatari Prime Minister highlighted the important role of the GCC countries in mediating and supporting humanitarian needs in the Russian
-Ukrainian war.
For his part, Borrell said that the first EU-GCC summit an ambitious step for a better future between the GCC and EU.
It is also a strong message to the world about a consensus among the two regions on building a strategic partnership for the twenty-first century, he said.
Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council Jasem Al-Budaiwi hailed the Summit final statement, considering it an excellent document.
Al-Budaiwi stressed that the summit succeeded in bringing the views of the two regions closer.
He pointed out that exempting Gulf citizens from the Schengen visa requirement was discussed in details during the summit.
