Putin applauds Algeria’s willingness to play mediation role over Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday expressed admiration of Algeria’s readiness to play a mediation role for settling the strife with Ukraine.

Putin, speaking at a news conference with his guest, the Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, expressed gratitude to the Algerian president for joining the Arab contact group, formed in 2022 to play a go-between diplomatic role between Moscow and Kyiv.

Putin saiD his talks with his Algerian counterpart dealt with developments in Ukraine, conditions in Libya and Sudan and prospects of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian cause.

For his side, president Tebboune said the talks with Putin dealt with regional issues namely the Palestinian cause. He lauded Moscow’s support for Algeria’s bid to join the Brics and its acceptance of a mediation role by Algiers to to settle the strife in Ukraine.

The two sides, earlier during Tebboune’s visit, signed “the declaration for strategic partnership,” an agreement for cooperation in communications, plants protection, education, a memo on protecting water resources, a protocol for cooperation between the two countries’ justice ministries, and an accord on space cooperation for peaceful purposes.

Earlier, while receiving the Algerian president at the Kremlin, Putin affirmed that Russia’s relations with Algeria are of strategic nature, according to the Russian Television.

Algeria is one of three top partners for Russia in Africa, Putin said, noting that the mutual cooperation within framework of OPEC+ and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) contributes to stability of the international markets.

President Tebboune reacted, assuring his guest that Algeria would remain faithful toward its relationship and friendship with Moscow. “These ties will not be undermined with international conditions and pressures,” he affirmed.

He lauded Moscow for supporting his country in attaining a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council, and indicated at significance of Moscow’s support for Algiers’ bids to join the Brics.
