Spain eyes EU “reindustrialization” under impending presidency – PM

Spain seeks to seal initiatives aiming to push forward the “reindustrialization” of European Union (EU) member states when Madrid takes over the bloc’s rotating presidency next month, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Thursday.

Chief among the measures is introducing a common minimum corporate tax rate in EU member countries, in addition to enhancing supply chains across the bloc as part of efforts to avert industrial shortages, he told a gathering of EU envoys and Spanish officials in Madrid.

Establishing European dominance in the fields of artificial intelligence and digital security constitutes a “first priority,” the Spanish prime minister underlined, citing a “green transition” and electricity market reforms as key initiatives Madrid has planned.

On other significant issues on its agenda, he said Spain seeks to finalize an EU migration deal aiming to deal with the influx of asylum-seekers and migrants, under which a “joint migration system” would assign each member state a share, he added.

Spain will take over the Presidency of the EU Council for a six-month period starting on July 1.
