Washington: US President Donald J. Trump has expressed his willingness to resume mediation efforts in the ongoing dispute between Egypt and Ethiopia over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). In a message to Egyptian President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi, Trump emphasized that resolving this issue is a top priority for his administration. According to Kuwait News Agency, Trump's message highlighted his appreciation for President Al-Sisi's leadership, particularly in mediating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He acknowledged the security and humanitarian challenges faced by Egypt and its neighboring regions since October 2023. Trump reaffirmed the United States' commitment to peace and expressed his determination to facilitate negotiations that would address water sharing concerns among Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. The GERD, situated in Ethiopia's Benishangul-Gumuz Region near the Sudanese border, has been a point of contention due to its potential impact on water resources in Egypt and Sudan. Trump emphas ized the necessity of a collaborative approach, involving technical expertise and transparent negotiations, to ensure equitable water distribution and energy production. Trump's message reiterated the United States' stance that no single state should dominate the Nile's resources at the expense of its neighbors. He proposed a framework that would allow for predictable water management during dry periods, while enabling Ethiopia to harness electricity generation, some of which could benefit Egypt and Sudan. The US President concluded by expressing hope that the dispute over the GERD would not escalate into a military conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia. The GERD, also known as the Hidase Dam, stands as Africa's largest hydroelectric project, having been inaugurated by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in September 2025.
