Pres. of European Commission: Turkish people value democratic institutions

President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Monday said the big participation in the elections in Turkiye, “is a very clear sign that the Turkish people are committed to exercising their democratic rights and that they value the democratic institutions.” “This is a big-win -win of yesterday,” she told a press conference in Brussels today.

“The elections are still open. We have to see for the second round. We are following very closely the announcements on this file and we have to see what the second round brings,” she added.

According to media reports, after about 99 percent of ballot boxes counted, incumbent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has received 49.4 percent of votes and his main rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu 45 pct.

Since neither of them received the 50 pct of votes needed for an outright win, a run-off, therefore, is expected to take place on May 28.
