Tehran: Pakistan army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is set to visit the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday, as announced by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei. This news was reported by Anadolu Ajansi (AA), citing the state news agency.
According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, the purpose of Munir's visit, accompanied by a delegation, is to enhance bilateral cooperation and further Pakistan's efforts to contribute to regional peace and security. Baqaei noted that Munir will engage in discussions with senior Iranian officials during his trip.
Pakistan has played a significant role as a mediator between Iran and the United States throughout the ongoing conflict, maintaining active communication with both nations. On June 17, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding and initiated negotiations towards a final agreement. However, the talks encountered obstacles due to disagreements on security guarantees and navigating the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The situation escalated between July 8 and July 24, with the US and Iran exchanging military strikes. The US launched attacks on targets within Iran, and in retaliation, Tehran targeted US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
