Islamabad: Pakistan and Iran on Monday engaged in discussions on regional security during the visit of Iranian Chief of General Staff (CGS), Major General Mohammad Bagheri, to Pakistan. The Iranian CGS met with the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, in the nation's capital, Islamabad. Both parties underscored the longstanding and fraternal ties between the two countries and emphasized the need to enhance trade and economic relations for mutual benefit, as stated in a release by the President House.
According to Kuwait News Agency, the dialogue also highlighted terrorism as a shared challenge necessitating effective and coordinated measures from both nations. The Iranian Chief of General Staff expressed appreciation for Pakistan's position on issues concerning Gaza and Lebanon.
Further discussions on regional security took place in Rawalpindi between Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Syed Asim Munir, and the Iranian CGS. A press release from Pakistan military's media wing, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), noted that General Bagheri visited the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi and held talks with Pakistan's COAS. The conversation centered on the prevailing regional security environment and bilateral defense cooperation. The Iranian dignitary laid a floral wreath at the martyr monument to honor Pakistan's martyrs upon his arrival at GHQ. He was warmly received with a guard of honor by a contingent of the Pakistan Army, as reported by ISPR.
