Jakarta: One person was killed in Jakarta when he was run over by a police tactical vehicle during worker and student protests near the parliament building late Thursday. The protests were driven by demands to raise wages, end outsourcing, revise a controversial 2020 job creation law, and reduce taxes, in addition to concerns about economic conditions, alleged corruption, and growing military influence in politics.
According to Kuwait News Agency, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed shock and sadness in a statement, describing the police actions as "excessive." He assured that the government would support the victim's family and urged the public to remain calm and trust the authorities.
The national police chief Listyo Prabowo extended a public apology to the victim's family, while Jakarta's police chief Asep Suheri pledged full accountability for the incident.
